Speaking engagements and other events are wonderful opportunities to promote your work. However, if you sell your work, you are required to have a business license, and to collect and remit taxes. Selling without fulfilling these obligations can result in fines and tax entanglements.

Here are some helpful tips for selling your work at an event:

1. Work with an existing retailer.
   • The business hosting the event (church, university, bookstore, etc.) can obtain copies to sell.
   • All requirements associated with the sale of the publication, including obtaining a business license, collecting and remitting taxes, and any other state and local requirements are the responsibility of the business.
     
     
2. Become a reseller.
   • If you own a business in the state in which the work is being sold, then we can sell to your business just as we would to any other business.
   • All requirements associated with the sale of the publication, including obtaining a business license, collecting and remitting taxes, and any other state and local requirements are the responsibility of your business.
   • We are able to ship only to the state(s) in which your business license is valid. Once you have your business established, please contact us at 800-328-4648 for information on setting up an Augsburg Fortress trade account. We can mail or email you the New Vendor forms needed to set up your Augsburg Fortress trade account.
     
     
3. Encourage customers to order copies of your work.
   • Bring a sample copy of the work and a supply of promotional flyers including our toll free number and on-line store web address. We will be happy to provide the flyers; please contact our marketing staff.
     
     
4. Sell your work on consignment.
   • We will ship copies of your work to your event and you will be responsible for collecting payments and returning any unsold copies. We will provide information on the price of the publication, which will include all necessary taxes and shipping.
   • Because Augsburg Fortress sells the publication, all requirements associated with the sale, including obtaining a business license, collecting and remitting taxes, and any other state and local requirements are our responsibility. You can order your product for consignment sales by downloading this form to fill out and mail or fax in.

Many authors/composers/artists have asked us about purchasing copies for personal use and then reselling them at the events they attend. Here are some reminders about personal use copies:

• You are contractually entitled to purchase copies for personal use only at your special author discount. These copies may not be resold.
• No royalties are payable to you on copies purchased for personal use at your special author discount. (You do receive royalties on copies sold under any of the four sales scenarios described above.)

If you order an unusually large quantity for personal use, our order takers may ask you to confirm that the copies are for personal use and are not for resale. Please understand that this query is intended as a reminder of the responsibilities associated with being a reseller.
