IMPORTANT INFORMATION about the Legacy CD-ROM PLEASE READ WARRANTY TEXT DOCUMENT FOR INFORMATION REGARDING LIMITATION OF LIABILITY, WARRANTY AND RETURNS INFORMATION AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT. MINIMUM WINDOWS SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR LEGACY WITH ACROBAT(R) READER 4.0 - i486TM or Pentium(r) (recommended) processor-based personal computer - Microsoft(r) Windows(r) 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT(r) 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later - 24 MB of available RAM on Windows 95 and Windows 98 - 10 MB of available hard-disk space for the Acrobat(r) Reader files. - 12 Mb of available hard-disk space for the Basic files If you plan to use the Education or Year-Round resources, you will need to have *additional* hard-disk space available according to the following chart: - 16 Mb of available hard-disk space for the Education files - 17 Mb of available hard-disk space for the Year_Round files - 17-45 Mb of available hard-disk space to install everything (the lesser number applies if you install the Year Round package directly rather than by installing the Basic package and upgrading.) IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING MEMORY/RAM The number of applications that your computer is able to run simultaneously depends very much upon the amount of available RAM (Random Access Memory) that your computer has available to it. The Legacy browser includes 'hot links' that automatically open other applications for you such as the Acrobat Reader or your word-processor (or the WordPad application if you do not have a word-processor installed). However, the browser will *not* verify if you have enough memory available before opening another application. If you try to run too many applications at the same time, your operating system will begin to respond sluggishly and may eventually stop running (crash). To prevent this, close any running applications that you are not using before opening new ones. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING FILE FORMATS Many of the reproducible resources included in the different packages are provided in two formats: Portable Document Format and Microsoft(r) Word for Windows 6.0 Document format. Portable Document Format (or simply, PDF) is a file format developed by Adobe Systems. PDF captures formatting information from a variety of desktop publishing applications, making it possible to send formatted documents and have them appear on the recipient's monitor or printer as they were intended. To view a file in PDF format, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader, a free application distributed by Adobe Systems. We have included the Reader on the Legacy CD for your convenience. We included the files using Microsoft(r) Word for Windows 6.0 Document format because Microsoft Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT 4.0 include an application called the WordPad which will allow viewing, editing, and limited conversion of these into other formats. The hot links in the Legacy browser require that you have the appropriate applications installed on your computer in order to function. If the links fail to function correctly, you will need to associate the type of document with the application you wish to use as your default viewer. In MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows environments, the file's type is specified by its three-character extension. For example, the.DOC extension identifies Microsoft Word documents. To re-associate a document with your default viewer 1. Select the file by clicking on it once. 2. Hold the SHIFT key (either one) down and then RIGHT-CLICK on the selected file. 3. From the CONTEXT menu, choose "Open with" 4. In the "Open with" dialogue, choose the application you wish to use as your default viewer, check the box titled "Always use this program to open this type of file", and click 'OK'. CLIP ART All of the clip art is included two directories, Clip_art and Clipart_small. The clip art graphic files are provided in TIF (Tagged Image Format) and PICT (MacPicture) formats. The graphics files are uncompressed and ready to use. Simply start your word processing or desktop publishing software and proceed to place or import the graphics as desired for use in your documents. If you are uncertain of how to do this, please consult your software manual or online help. The Clip Art is not installed with any of the installation packages. If you wish to have the files available to you without the CD, you will need to manually copy the directories to your hard drive from the CD-ROM. Tips for using the Clip Art - Graphics cannot be opened directly from the CD. They must be imported into word processing or desktop publishing software. - In some programs, the graphics may import at a very small size and must be enlarged. - The screen resolution of the graphics is not reflective of the quality of the printed output. - When enlarged over 100%, the graphics may begin to lose quality. - See your word processing or desktop publishing manual for more detailed formatting information.
